Thursday 6th May 2021

Darkness Into Light 2021, supported by Electric Ireland, will take place at sunrise on the morning of 8th May. This year, as you cannot gather together at the usual Darkness Into Light venues, they are asking all supporters to don their yellow t-shirts and take part in the event at a time and in a location that suits them. This year you can choose to sign up for a special sunrise event – walk, swim, bike or simply share your sunrise moment or take part in the annual Darkness Into Light Challenge.

Every person who takes part in Darkness Into Light is already making a difference to someone in their community who is suffering from feelings of hopelessness or despair. Every person who decides to fundraise for their event goes one step further to help fund mental health support services for people who need them, where they need them, when they need them.

Each year the walk provides an opportunity for people to connect with their local community and to show their support for those who have been impacted by suicide. The Darkness into light team of dedicated volunteers, in Ireland and overseas, return year on year to make the event a success and to help continue to raise awareness in the global fight against suicide and self-harm. Since Darkness Into Light began, supporters have helped raise almost €29 million, which has enabled Pieta House to keep their doors and 24/7 helpline open for people in crisis, free of charge.

To find out what’s happening in your community follow your local Darkness Into Light Facebook page, this year in Portumna a 4km walk will be marked out for the whole day on Saturday 8th May and will have the banner of Hope available for signing from 5am. However please note that there is not a specific start and finish time as large numbers are strictly prohibited. Sanitiser will be available at the banner, please try to bring your own pens if possible and wear a mask at this point.
