Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs Anne Rabbitte says the government has failed to deliver on their promise of 5,000 baby boxes for new parents.
Deputy Rabbitte explained:
It would appear baby boxes, announced by Minister Zappone last year to support new parents, have not progressed 11 months on. According to a PQ response I received, an oversight group will be established this year to lead the development of the pilot and scope of the project to prepare for implementation and evaluation. It begs the question, what exactly has been done since the Minister announced this project nearly one year ago?
Deputy Rabbitte continued:
I understand there has been no expenditure on Baby Boxes to date. This appears to be another case of this government making big promises and failing to deliver.
Deputy Rabbitte concluded:
Life can be difficult for young families. Unaffordable housing and soaring childcare costs are common-place in modern Ireland. The government has consistently over-promised and under-delivered. It has become apparent their baby box proposal is another in a long line of failed commitments.
