The initiative is a collaboration between Ability West and the Brothers of Charity, which will provide access to housing for adults with
intellectual disabilities throughout Galway City and County.
This shared vision and ambitious collaboration has resulted in securing five years funding for the project.
The team will work with 32 individuals over the next five years to prepare them for more independent living by building on their life skills and assisting them to find socially valued, roles in the community.
By identifying the blocks and barriers these people face on a daily basis, the project team will help them navigate these so that they can become integrated into the communities in which they live.
Whilst the project is a collaboration between Ability West and the Brothers of Charity Services Ireland – West Region, it has also been identified as a Priority Action in the HSE National Service Plan 2022 – 2027 following the publication of the Disability Capacity Review 2032 in which the gap between service demand and service provision was clearly identified.
aims to develop a Rights-Based approach to housing, supporting person-centred supports, community inclusion and enablement by establishing pathways into housing for the people supported and are collaborating with Galway City and County Council to look at housing solutions under their Strategic Plan for Housing People with a Disability 2021 – 2026.
Speaking at the launch of the project today, Minister Anne Rabbitte said:
I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of the launch of the “Living my Life” project, which I think is going to have a positive and tangible impact on the lives of many people with disabilities in Galway. When I first met with Proactive Carers Galway shortly after being appointed Minister, the merits of this project were clear and I’m glad to have worked with the HSE, Brothers of Charity and Ability West to get this over the line.
In securing funding in my recent Budgets for this project, I think this will be a blueprint for other parts of the country when it comes to how we delivery housing for people with disabilities and I look forward to watching it develop over the coming years.
Ability West are pleased to be a partner in this project. Their Director of Clinical Service Bryan Gallagher said:
As a strong advocate for inclusion and equal opportunities, Ability West is proud to express our unwavering support as a partner for the transformative initiative.
My Life Demonstration Housing Project
This project aims to provide individuals with disabilities in the Galway region with the necessary support and access to housing, enabling them to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
The Brothers of Charity Service Ireland – West Region are also delighted to be co-partner in this project for the West of Ireland. Their Director of Services (West Region) Eamon Loughrey said:
The Living My Life Demonstration Housing Project, with a multi-annual budget, will enable both Ability West and BOSCI West Region to implement a Demonstration Project which will involve a proactive model of access to residential services for persons with an intellectualdisability over a five-year period (2023-2028).
The project allows for the planning and provision of residential supports for people, not in need of emergency residential services, which follows a rights-based approach to housing, community inclusion and enablement .
