Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East Anne Rabbitte has called on the government to clarify the levels of funding in the Rebuilding Ireland home loan scheme. The Minister for Housing has confirmed that ten local authorities have run out of funding.
Deputy Rabbitte commented “It is very concerning that young people in my constituency, who have been turned down by traditional mortgage lenders, are applying to the local authority for a home loan but have had their hopes and dreams dashed.
The home loan fiasco has left many in doubt as to where their application now stands. I have sat down with many young couples in my office and advice clinics to help with their applications. Some of these have been approved and the government must clarify the position with staged payments.
She went on to say:
The government have more to answer. It appears the Minister’s own press office was informed the funding ran out before the applicants knew. It shows exactly where the government and their priorities rest. When the photo shoots and hard hats are gone the government attention also seems to vanish. The Minister must clarify concluded Deputy Rabbitte:
- what levels of funding are available?
- what level of funding is incoming for the scheme?
- when will the ten local authorities commence issuing home loans once again?
