Youth Work Ireland

Youth Work Ireland is a Federation of 20 Member Youth Services located across Ireland, including Galway City and County. They provide a range of supports and services to meet the needs and aspirations of young people and local communities.

A political briefing was organized for all member youth services from across the country, to meet political representatives to showcase the work of Youth Work Ireland member services and discuss issues that impact the delivery of youth services.

Youth Work Ireland was represented by Emma and Nathaniel from the Future Leaders programme and Aoife Finn from CAPE Youth Project Galway Joseph Burke from Youth Work Ireland Galway – Loughrea and Oliver King, Board member and Deirdre Bermingham, Managing Director.

Key asks

They key asks from Youth Work Galway included greater resources for their Youth Projects, an accessible and dedicated Youth Centre for Galway City, funding for a Volunteer Support Worker and a dedicated fund for free Youth Counselling Service to meet the growth in eigth locations across Galway City and County.

During the briefing, the following key tasks were highlighted:

  1. Support a strategy of “safe spaces” for young people, youth clubs and projects ensuring quality buildings and facilities in all communities particularly through National Planning Guidelines;
  2. Support a unified counselling system for local youth services;
  3. Amend the Electoral Acts to Allow Votes at 16 for Local and European Elections in 2024;
  4. Support the reinvigoration of Youth Clubs as a key grassroot activity for young people in particularly in isolated communities.
