Minister Rabbitte has been working with the Saolta Group, clinicians, Cancer Care West, and her government colleagues, to advance plans for the Cancer Centre’s development.
The HSE’s Capital Plan commits to furthering the design feasibility of the project this year
Minister Rabbitte commented:
It’s great to see the Cancer Centre included in this year’s HSE Capital Plan, which gets the development passed the first hurdle.
The Cancer Centre at UHG would be a beacon of best practice not just for Galway but the west of the country, from Clare up to Donegal.
Ultimately, the Cancer Centre would include operating theatres, inpatient ward accommodation, ambulatory day care centre, and associated diagnostics.
There’s now funding set aside for initiating the design feasibility in 2023, which I’m sure will be progressed as quickly as possible.
And she continued:
Over the past 12 months, I have been working with officials in the Department of Health, the HSE at a national and local level, as well as the Saolta Group, clinicians in Galway and Cancer Care West to advance this project.
And she continued:
This is a pivotal development for cancer patients in Galway and, once finally commissioned, will need hundreds of millions invested to deliver a world class cancer centre at the hospital.
And she continued:
Also included in the Capital Plan published on Monday is the inclusion of the Emergency Department Extension at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.
Minister Rabbitte continued:
Amidst the raft of ongoing development in Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, I am also pleased to see the extension of the Emergency Department at the hospital also include in the Capital Plan.
There has been significant investment in Portiuncula in recent years and now we’ve a commitment to extend the ED, which is so greatly needed and will add extra capacity to ease pressure on the hospital and its staff.
This is an issue that I raised with the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar during his visit to the hospital earlier this year.
This comes on top of the 50 bed ward block that’s under construction, as well as the additional rooms in the Outpatients Department being delivered.
These are two important developments for Galway and I will continue to work with the various stakeholders to ensure that progress is made to bring these projects through to construction, which ultimately will ensure better healthcare for the people of Galway.
