About the Paralympics

On 28 August, the Opening Ceremony on the Place de la Concorde will kick off 11 days of competition featuring around 4,400 athletes.

There will be plenty to look forward to at the Paralympic Games. Athletes from around the world will compete in 549 medal events across 22 Paralympic sports. The City of Light will provide a perfect backdrop for athletes.

Opening roughly three weeks after the Olympic Games, the Paralympics will be another opportunity for the public to enjoy worldclass sport and cheer for athletes.

The same iconic venues will stage intense competition.

The pair of mascots that captured the hearts of Olympic fans will return for the Paralympic Games.

There will also be celebration sites where people can experience the Paralympics together.

The Paris 2024 Paralympics, which take place from 28 August to 8 September, will make history as the first summer Paralympics held in France.

PARIS OLYMPIAN MASCOTS

The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic mascots have been revealed as two Phrygian caps decked out in France’s national colours.

The two characters, who are to be known as the Olympic and Paralympic Phryges, have the golden Paris 2024 logo across their chests, and are described as having “mischievous and expressive eyes”.

The Paralympic mascot has a running blade, making it the first time that a mascot for the Games has itself had a visible disability.

WHY THE PHRYGE?

“We chose an ideal rather than an animal. We chose the Phrygian cap because it’s a very strong symbol for the French Republic. For French people, it’s a very well-known object that is a symbol of freedom. The fact that the Paralympics mascot has a visible disability also sends a strong message: to promote inclusion.”

The two mascots share a motto of “Alone we go faster, but together we go further”, and the Olympic Phryge is described as “a tactician with a calculating brain”, while the Paralympic Phryge is “spontaneous and full of energy and enthusiasm”.

The official IOC website helpfully explains that their name is to be pronounced “fri-jee-uhs”.

In 2024, the Games will offer a groundbreaking celebration of sport for the entire world.

More events will take place away from the stadiums, at the heart of the city.

The Opening Ceremonies will also follow the same approach: for the first time in history, the host country’s communities will resonate with the rhythm of the Games like never before.

Thanks to a groundbreaking approach, numerous sites and venues across France and French overseas territories (including village squares, gardens, parks, stadiums, school playgrounds and exceptional sites like Trocadéro, the Hôtel de Ville square in Paris and Parc de la Villette) will become places of celebration and events.
