Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East Anne Rabbitte is calling on the government to address the increasing waiting times at Galway University Hospital. Figures have shown outpatient waiting lists increase from 35,138 in January 2017 to 39,662 in January 2019.
Deputy Rabbitte said “The ever-increasing waiting times at Galway University Hospital are very concerning. The Minister must step in to stop the growing outpatient waiting lists. The list has increased year on year which begs the question where will we be next year?
Latest figures have shown nearly 40,000 people are waiting on outpatient lists which is unacceptable for one of the main hospitals in the western region.
She went on to say:
The figures from the National Treatment Purchase Fund have shown that of those near 40,000 people there are 6,708 individuals who are waiting for longer than 18 months for an outpatient appointment.
and concluded
There are negative patient experiences as a consequence of these waiting lists. There is a wider concern that time spent waiting for an appointment may delay diagnoses or treatment. The government must stand over their commitment to reduce waiting times and make the necessary changes to see the lists begin to reduce, concluded Deputy Rabbitte.
